Rotated F&T Trap

Can anybody explain to me how an F&T trap rotated by 90 degrees could be expected to work?
The end-of-main trap on my single-pipe, mechanical feed system was chronic headache, so I asked for a replacement or re-build when I had fitters in the building anyway to re-gasket the boiler this summer. What was fitted was a Spirax Sarco FT-15, installed valve-side up.
When the system came-up this fall, I started to see evidence of steam getting to the receiver. Only then did I take a closer look and noticed that the trap was installed sideways. I can't visualize how this would work, but neither the inspector nor the Class A fitter who oversaw the rebuild flagged it, and it never occurred to me to look more closely until my receiver started to vent steam.
As far as I can discern, what I have at the end of my line is a really expensive p-trap. Can anybody enlighten me?
Thanks,
Chris

point of the equipment with a collecting leg before the trap,
in a position so that the float arm is in a horizontal plane
so that the float rises and falls vertically, and with the

The trap must be installed in an upright position
with the orientation arrow on the body or on
the nameplate pointing straight down. The flow
direction markings on the body or cover must be
