Rotated F&T Trap

Can anybody explain to me how an F&T trap rotated by 90 degrees could be expected to work?

The end-of-main trap on my single-pipe, mechanical feed system was chronic headache, so I asked for a replacement or re-build when I had fitters in the building anyway to re-gasket the boiler this summer.  What was fitted was a Spirax Sarco FT-15, installed valve-side up.

When the system came-up this fall, I started to see evidence of steam getting to the receiver.  Only then did I take a closer look and noticed that the trap was installed sideways.  I can't visualize how this would work, but neither the inspector nor the Class A fitter who oversaw the rebuild flagged it, and it never occurred to me to look more closely until my receiver started to vent steam.

As far as I can discern, what I have at the end of my line is a really expensive p-trap. Can anybody enlighten me?

Thanks,

Chris
