Condensate pump noisy as an old train

Steam system in an apartment building, total 1998 equipment upgrade with a Burnham boiler using 4 GPH, the Hoffman 609PF pump appears to be functioning OK but the noise it makes is remarkable.

When the second pump was installed some 18 months ago because of the same problem, it was much quieter. What causes these pumps to become so noisy, and can something be done to repair rather than replace? They're pricy pumps...

FWIW, there was mud that came out of the condensate tank when the pump was replaced; it wasn't plugged by any means, but when I looked at it mud was slowly oozing out of the flange hole. I think the installer did a good job of cleaning it out.

maybe that mud is wearing the pump out. can you re-pipe in such a way as to have no pump? it seems like some buried return in your system may have a leak, and is contaminating the system. if mud is bad for pumps, it is also bad for boilers, as a layer of sediment inside can allow the sections to heat unevenly, and distort.--nbc
