waterlogged gorton#1s??

I made the mistake of tapping into the side of the vertical leg that goes from the steam main to the wet return( it was the only section that was remotely accessible). I was adding Gorton#1s to an unvented main. After running the system for a few minutes water came FLOWING out of the Gortons. I'm assuming that the condensate was cascading down the side of that pipe and prevented  the steam that reached the Gorton from draining properly. My question is can I reuse the Gortons or should I suspect that they were damaged by the excessive water?

  • under water?

they are probably ok, and only need a rinse in the sink.

there may be some problems here, such as bad venting or pressure too high.--nbc

The water line was dancing up and down.  did tape into the a 2nd main(this one I tapped into the top) and there were no problems

    you probably tapped into ...

your "A" dimension .. what is dry at rest is wet at work. make sure that you are at least 28inches above the boiler's waterline. on your vertical drops.

    follow up

I went back today to finish up job. Moved the leaking vents to top of horizontal pipe leading from end of main to A dimension pipe. Thank Heaven no leaks! Mains and most of the radiators heat up fairly quickly. There is one radiator that takes for ever to heat up. I removed the vent and adjusted the pitch and it still takes forever. It sounds like there are tidal waves inside radiator. The water line does some big time bouncing while boiler is firing. I'm guessing that excess water is being tossed into the pipes and for some reason this radiator is getting the brunt of it. This radiator is the furthest from the boiler From a  horizontal standpoint. I have to try to convince the customer to have his boiler skimmed. Have a good one.
