    Sight glass

This is 3 questions.....How many inches of water are in the sight glass on the boiler?  While it was running? when it stopped?  and now?

    Burner shuts off

Please reply to questions asked in the same thread so we can track whats going on. Just click on the "Reply to this Thread" and post your response there.

Is this single pipe steam? that would just have one pipe feeding

the radiators with an air vent half way up the radiator on the side opposite the the radiator supply valve (these supply valves should all be fully open).

If you jumped the thermostat and that didn't change things we have to know what else is going on.

Is the water level in the boiler ok? Is the water in the gauge glass bouncing up and down; if so, how much? what does the pressre gauge on the front of the boiler read when the system shuts down? It should be just a few psi but this might be hard to tell on a 0-30 psi gauge.

Is there any indication that the low water cutoff is blocking the system?. maybe there is a red LED somewhere?

It sounds like the burner is shutting off because the steam pressure is increasing to the high pressure limit. that is set by a Pressuretrol that monitors the pressure inside the boiler.

Usually when the thermostat calls for heat the burner will come on (oil or gas?) and it will run till the thermostat is satisfied or the boiler shuts down because the high pressure limit has been reached (Preassuretrol); if that happens the boiler usually restarts in a couple of minutes. The pressure builds quickly if the radiator vents, or the main vents have corroded shut, this is not uncommon on these systems. One yjong you should remember is that steam cannot go where air is trapped (by corroded air vents)! yje same is true of any water that gets trapped in the piping.

In order to help you we need detailed information as to exactly what is going on. Do the air valves on the radiators snap shut (chrome things have way up on the opposite side from the radiator input valve); they should hiss until the hot steam hits them?

Can you post some pictures of the boiler, any controls hanging off it. the piping in front and behind it (anyplace pipes come out of it), the mains (large pipes above the boiler), and any air vents on the mains 9silver or green valves that release air).

Get back to us with this information and we will try to help you.

    Steam or forced hot water?

    John,

The cut in pressure is usually 0.5PSI with the cutout normally being 1.5 to 2PSI.

What pump is running? Are you sure this is a steam system? Can you take some pictures and post them?

We need more information because we can;t see or hear what you are seeing and hearing. please try to answer the questions we have asked so we can help you.
