Loud clunking noises in boiler at beginning of a cycle - suggestions?

The title says it all...I'm thinking that there may be some dirt or oil in the boiler, but not sure how to get it out of there and get clean water in there. Someone once told me I had a "top skimmer" on my boiler, but I've never used it. Obviously I am a novice - any advice is welcome, thank you!

Noise at the start of cycle
Has this just started or has it been going on for some time?
Is the water level in the gauge glass at the correct level, and is it bouncing up and down?
What does the pressure gauge read?
Does the noise go away as the boiler comes up to temperature?
What make of boiler?
Post some pictures of the boiler and the piping around and above it so we can see how it is configured.
