pressure buildup

I am working on a steam boiler that is building pressure within minutes of firing. It reaches almost 10 p.s.i. with in 15 minutes, and frankly i am stumped on what might be the problem. So far I have tried to clean the returns but have gotten no results from that. If anyone has any ideas about a possible cause that would be a big help. Thanks

What is it supposed to run at? Is this in your home? What is the pressuretrol set for?

The pressure is set to 1.5psi and yes it is a residential installation.

Sounds like a clogged pigtail not shutting the boiler down. Could also be a bad pressure gauge, if that's where you're reading it from.

Is your boiler not shutting down when it gets to 1.5? Check pigtail first. Check working gauge second replce both as necessary. Send us pictures of your pressure controll tree please including inside of pressurtrol as best as possible.

another thing...

Make sure that your pressuretrol spring isn't over compressed. It is possible to crank it too low thereby putting downwaard pressure on the sppring attached to the screw and messing it up. You shoul be able to see slight gaps within the coil.
