Another End Switch?

My Caleffi Zone Valves go through end switches like nobody's business. They use a burgess micro switch for an end switch and it just can’t take the relay current inrush or something. The actuator in the valve is only somewhat precise so I’m sure it’s not hitting the switch properly all of the time. This appears to be a design defect and I note that in the Caleffi catalog they have changed the end switch design to a reed switch.

Anybody else having any issues with them? My End switches are just closing TT on a Zone Relay box so it should be no big deal. I’m going to try and get some new heads or retrofit kits or something. I should have stuck with Honeywell.

    Been There Done That

I had the EBV's for a while. They are noisy. I can hear them opening and closing all over the house. At first I didnl't like the noise but after I got used to it it was sort of reasuring.. Hearing the thermostat relay followed by the valve opening and then the fin tube ticking assured me that all was functioning. What finally did the EBV's in was the fail to close issue I had with two out of my four valves. Every few weeks I would have to remove the heads and let them reorient themselves. They may have improved with age but I just didn't trust them.

Not that the Caleffi issue is any better. The switch in the valve is a high quality unit and if operated corectly it should last forever. However, the switch is not operated corectly. The actuator is only partially depressed. This results in premature failure. So rather than fix the old actuator, they changed to a reed switch and a magnet but only for 24 volt low current applications.

It should work provided the chosen reed switch is of good quality. Now it is a matter of finding a wholesaler willing to open the box and see if the heads have the new vs the old switch.

    End switch

I have had a lot of trouble with the Caleffi end switches too.  I complained to Hot Rod, who works for them now, and he said he would send me some new ones.  Never got anything.  Went back to honeywell.

Edwards Engineering, Flair, Erie, Honeywell, Bell & Gossett, Taco..................too many to count.

Finally settled on Danfoss and have used them for many years without one problem; quiet and reliable.

    End switch

Got a call from Dale Cikaluk at Caleffi.  Told him about the problems I have had.  He will be shipping me some new ones.  Thank you.  My faith in Caleffi has been restored.  By the way, he says they have a 2 year warranty.
