Hydrotherm model sg200[Has side steam tappings.]
Complaint of water hammer. Observed the following
3 floors heat
Only one of two side steam tappings is being used.
No equalizer /Hartford-loop
No insulation on main
First half of header is pitched against steam flow [boiler was once moved]
half of the risers are piped directly down into header.
high water line [defective float control]
Oversized radiator vents on first floor.
clogged main vent.
pressure set to 4.
So far I've lowered pressure fixed main vent and insulated. No noticeable change.
Now, what should I try first?
Thanks in advance. MB

Litany of problems...
... one solution: repipe.
There is so much wrong with what you have described, that I would be inclined to just bite the bullet and repipe. Since the hammer could be caused by more than one of the problems you've described, you could end up spending more money and certainly way more time trying to fiddle one thing after another to fix it.0 -
First.
I would first repipe the entire near boiler. That will give you the best chance of solving the water hammer. Lower the water line back to normal and set your pressure to cut out at 2.
Insulated pipes will stop steam from condensing, but it won't tell water that's already there to go back. Sounds like the water is coming straight from the boiler.
When you say "half of the risers are piped directly down into header." Do you mean the risers to the radiators coming off the main?0 -
Thanks,
The risers I refer to are the ones feeding the radiators.0 -
Geez.
Get those risers to a main.0
