If I had to make a guess.....

....I would say the venter is the issue.  Riello burners work their best when firing into a positive pressure chamber area.  The venter may be causing an excessive draft.  What boiler is the burner attached to?  Lining the chimney is, by far, the better option if it can be done.

    Heatboy is on to something

check the draft. Too much draft will pull the flame right off the burner head (we call it "loss of retention") and cause a smoky fire.

Is there a draft regulator between the boiler and the power venter? What size is it? What size is the breech (flue outlet) on the boiler? What is the draft at the breech? What model Burnham is it?

BTW, according to Firedragon, there are only detail differences between the Riello MEC and 40-series burners. I don't have his books in front of me to get the specifics though.....

    Nope

There is a big difference between those 2 burners. A complete remake of the burner. The Mectron which came out after the MEC is similar to the 40 series.

    That Old MEC

Didn't they stop with the MEC in 1972 or so.  I've not seen another burner run as long or as well for anywhere near that long.  Great burner, that said it's time I think to replace that old jenny.  It doesn't owe anyone anything:-)

    Peace

    Matthew

Now I wonder If I have a copy of the manual for one of those.  I'll check tonight.

If I do I'll copy it for you.

Yes the burner should be replaced, but I know of at least 15 still running fine.
