TT Smart-40 piping

Installing a Smart-40 to TT-110, using a Honeywell AM-series mixing valve. The piping diagram for the tank does not really allow for many options. I realize the tank can be piped numerous ways, but I am trying to stay as close to the manufacturer's detail as possible, so not to encounter any warranty problems later on--I have heard TT can be difficult in this area. My first question is with the placement of the unions atop the tank, where they request the hot water side be higher than the cold water drain. With the Honeywell, they suggest installing the mixing valve no more than 9" above the tank. This complicates the piping according to Triangle Tube. There must be easier way that meets both manufacturer's needs. Any ideas?
Secondly, TT shows the drain valve at the bottom, adding weight to an already flimsy pipe. I would rather put a valve right off the tee atop the boiler and just pipe down near the floor with a hose adapter on the end.
Any ideas will help. Thank you
