Looking for steam trap - please help!

I have inherited a house with a steam system, and one of the steam trap housings is cracked. I don't need the cover or the internal steam valve itself, just the base housing (the part that looks like older metal) in the pictures attached. Does anyone know where to find these? I suppose I should get an extra while I'm at it! Many thanks, Dan

    Looks like an Ideal trap

I'm far from an expert, but that looks like the Ideal Heating Equipment Company traps that I have in my home. I don't think you can get the body/housing any more.

Depending on how badly it's cracked you might want to try using JBWeld. It would at least buy you some time to find a replacement.

There was an error rendering this rich post.

  • Thermostatic Traps

As Brian suggested, you might try the JB Weld first and then think about a new trap. If you can I'd wait until it warms up in the spring before replacing the trap. .  Here's some notes I made on traps that might be of help.

    Thermostatic Radiator Traps

    Trap Quality (per Gerry Gill)

    1. Mepco (Dunham)

    2. Monash Younker

    3. Sterling

    4. Barnes & Jones

    Any of these are good.

    Many thanks

Many thanks!! I will try the sources for different traps you mentioned. I don't mind changing the housing, but I wanted to stay with the same innards, for simplicity's sake. Do all traps take the same internal mechanism? Thanks again! Dan

No, unfortunately the internal mechanisms are all different.  This even varies between models by the same manufacturer.  The replacement mechanisms can also be different from the original, even though they are designed to work in a specific make and model. In some cases they are an improvement over the original!

I see Gordo has posted an answer to your question. He's a steam pro and an expert on steam traps so be sure to provide what info you can as he may have some good recommendations.
