insulating steam main in tight spot

I have about 50 ft. of 2" main in my basement ceiling that I'd like to insulate. Problem is that it runs within a steel I-beam and the clearance is very tight. I may be able to jam some of the 1/2" insulation in there but am wondering if there's a better way.
Since this main sits on the I-beam and is normally within an enclosed box in the ceiling, can I just stuff fiberglass into the box?
