Joining cast iron baseboard

Just wondering what you use on the push nipples when joining cast iron baseboard together if anything. I have always used a little pipe dope to help slide them together but the last job I did (whole house) has had leaks show up between the sections in more than a few spots. This is after a years time.

We would use stuff called "blue block" or just "block" sealing compound. Only thing that works. Smells real good too. J
