perhaps you misheard??
there is this company .. TFI .. not TSI
http://www.tfi-everhot.com/ .. i don't see anything calls AS-7 though
however, according to their piping diagrams .. there should be an Anti-Scald valve located above .. maybe AS = Anti-Scald?1-pipe Homeowner - Queens, NYC

This is connected to the steam main
The main comes out of the boiler, then there is this thing, and then the main continues above it. The steam must travel through it as it leave the boiler. It is a cylindrical looking thing and looks like it is made out of brass.0 -
AS = anti-surge?
It's supposed to remove any entrapped water from the steam.0 -
Perhaps it is an old hot water maker?
How old is the boiler and related piping?Cost is what you spend , value is what you get.

Boiler and piping age
This boiler was installed in the mid 80's. I want to say 86 or 87. The piping is much older and I don't know when this thing was installed. My dad always remembers a steam system in the house and he is 63. We have no idea when the steam system was first installed. My dad remembers his parents converting the old coal boiler to oil before this one was put in. The house was built in 1850 and I think it had some form of central heating at the time it was built since there are no fireplaces and no stove hookups. I wish I had more info about the system's origins, but sadly anyone who would have known is no loner with us.0 -
how's about a picture?
how's about a picture of this thing you say lives in your cellar? does it look like it is of the modern age or the dead man age?1-pipe Homeowner - Queens, NYC

I wish I could post a pic
I thought about posting a pic, but the camera is dead. While my wife was attempting to capture the joy on our 3 year old's face as he laid eyes on what Santa had left when the camera hit the floor.
I think it is newer than older. My dad's uncles were "Dead Men" They owned the local oil company and did all of the work on the system until they died. I have no idea if anyone who has worked on it since had any idea if they new what they were doing.0 -
The anti surge guess is the winner
These were installed to save a proper piping job around the boiler.Cost is what you spend , value is what you get.

Seperator
I think its a steam separator, used instead of building a header0 -
But what is it really?
I'm not trying to sound dense, but what does it actually do? Does it require any maintenance (there is what looks like a removable plug on it)? Is it legit or a cheap way around something?0 -
seperator
Its there to dry out the steam, keep the water in the boiler and out of the system, the plug is for a clean out or a dirt pocket (i think), I remember Dan talking about them once before, I believe it was easier to install a steam separator than building a header, it tried to do the same thing that older boilers w/a large steam chest tried to do...and that was to keep the latent heat in the steam (keep it dry) I'm sure there is more info on this product0 -
steam separator...source
there is some discussion of steam separators here:
