Hello my name is Gary and I hold a mass. oil burner lic. I do mostly clean outs and some trouble shooting when they call. My newest problem is that I recieved a call this morning that this young lady had no heat I got there and the transformer was no good I had replaced it with in the year but ohwell. When  I got the unit fired up the smoke came out the front around the tankless.I do know that the unit had water dripping onto it and I think she wrotted threw. I now need to find a unit to replace this one. What is a comprable unit to the Columbian Emerald.

    I'm assuming this is a hot-water system

don't think the Emerald series had any steam models. With that said- you can still get boilers with tankless coils, but maintaining a boiler at full temp all summer long is wasteful. You won't be doing her any favors by staying with a tankless.

I'd install a three-pass boiler such as the Solaia, Trio, Buderus, Burnham MPO or similar, and an indirect tank for her domestic hot water. This would cost more up front but would use a lot less fuel.

Size the new boiler by doing a heat-loss calculation. You might be surprised at how small a boiler you need. This has happened to us many times!
