radiator issues

have a customer with a 3 story Victorian home. home built in late 1700. third story add in 1865. not certain when system went in. boiler replacements over the years. main vents on end and off on side of piping prior to wet leg return. several radiators on 2nd and 3rd floors off common risers. #31 vent rite on 3rd floor radiators to aid in venting risers. piping to 2nd floor is in between floor and ceiling so unsure of piping arrangement. have a couple of radiators on the 2nd floor that will not heat properly. have a feeling that they are teed with 90 ells and not 45 ells. single pipe. mains 90% insulated and risers are not. per customer insulating risers is not an option. go figure. The problematic radiators also have #31 quick vents which are working better than the adjustable but still have problems heating properly. thoughts anyone. thanks.

    uneven steam arrival

check those main vents for operation, and increase their capacity.

keep the pressure nice and low, with a good gauge [gaugestore.com 0-2 psi] and that will be a start.

check the thermostat anticipation. is the thermostat steam-rated.

if you jumper the boiler on [simulating a call for heat] , will all the radiators get hot equally, even though some heat faster than others?--nbc

system runs at .5 to .75 pressure. jumping tt home will overheat prior to radiator heating all the way across. column radiator with 11 sections oh 30-36in. high.

    jumpering thermostsat

do i understand that when you jumper the boiler on, that all radiators get hot eventually? is each one is getting hot at the same time, for that is the goal. that is why we place so much emphasis on the main venting, and correct low pressure.--nbc
