Help with BTU size and age

I have an American Standard stem/hot water boiler and I am tyring to find out the BTU rating and age of this unit as I am going to have to replace it very soon.  On the front plate it says Square heat type r boiler, net rating 405 MBh, max firing rate 675 MBh and size 3R4M.  I know that the BTU rating net would be 405,000 BTU.  Should I be looking for a new unit of this size or larger since the  max rating is 675,000 BTU?

  • Some advice,

Get a pro in there to calculate a H/L for the way your house is today.

Believe-me,,, you`ll get away with something much smaller!

    As Dave Has Said

Don't worry about the size of this boiler. Have a heat loss done.

There was an error rendering this rich post.

    Sizing Boiler

Your post says stem/hot water. I presume you mean steam. If steam a boiler is sized by the total EDR of the radiators. If hot water, then you'll need a heat loss calculation to properly size the boiler.
