Looking for Steam Pro in Brooklyn

Hi.  We live in Brooklyn, NY and need some work done on our steam system.  Can anyone recommend plumbers in Brooklyn that really know their steam?

We are aware that Gateway is highly recommended, but are also looking to find alternatives to give us a quote.  Is anyone familiar with "All Mechanical" or "A Real Good Plumber", both listed on FAP?

Thanks in advance!!!

    what type of work?

what type of work are you needing?

what type of dwelling/business is this?

what type of system do you have (1-pipe 2pipe etc)?

I was at Dan's Steam Seminar tonight and there were several guys from "A Real Good Plumber" there...but that's all I know about them

    Steamers in Brooklyn

I am familiar with both All Mechanical and RGP.  I live in a four-story co-op apt in Bklyn.  RGP did our boiler install in the summer of 2007.  We are very happy with their work to date.  In response to a complaint about the top apt not getting enough heat, they installed additional Gorton 1 vents on the main in the basement and on the risers in each apt, and that solved that complaint.  We also got estimates from All Mechanical and Gateway Plumbing.

I recommend that you do the same and that you get references and speak to those references.  Another thing that I did was go to the NYC Dept of Buildings web site and find addresses where each contractor had done work and call those people out of the blue.  Unfortunately, I can't recall exactly how I did that, but it allowed me to speak to past customers whose names were not supplied by the contractors themselves.

I also recommend that you educate yourself about your heating system.  That is how I ended up here in Feb of 2007 when my building's 50-year-old boiler cracked.  Get "The Art of Steam Heating" and read it.  The book is very readable for a lay person.  And my last recommendation is to continue to visit this board and read as many of the posts as you can.  Do not make the mistake of thinking that you can ignore your steam system after the new boiler is installed.  This is my third heating system with the "new" boiler and I am continually making changes to get the system to perform as optimally as I can and learning how to properly maintain it.  As far as I'm concerned, this web site contains invaluable information.

how to look up jobs from NYC plumbers/oil burner installers

    1) Get the license number of the plumber(s) in question .. required on their trucks and sometimes on their website.

    2) Go the NYC BIS website .. [url=http://a810-bisweb.nyc.gov/bisweb/LicenseTypeServlet?vlfirst=N]http://a810-bisweb.nyc.gov/bisweb/LicenseTypeServlet?vlfirst=N

    3) Enter in License number and license type in 3rd row.

    4) Copy Licensee LASTNAME

    5) Go back to search page .. enter LASTNAME and license type on 1st row

    6) Click on the linked number (ARA/LAAs) and see list of "filed" work

    7) Click on JOB# and look for Owner Name...and notice description of work performed

    8) Use other methods to search phone books/google for owner name phone number

    Yes

I think that is how I did it.  For many of the listings that I saw, the phone number of the customer was listed.
