Union Valve

Got a nasty union valve that just needs replacing... Steams and water is coming out of it. Tried repacking and such, just needs replaced. Do I need to remove the spud as well? Or can I just change the valve and hope the new male end matches with the old female end...?

replacing valve
maybe you can find the same valve, which will take the same spud, otherwise it is likely you will be replacing the spud as well. it is difficult enough, so that if you can fix the present valve, you will be better off.
perhaps a re-repacking will fix it, as sometimes the new packing does not mix with the old. for instance, teflon rope will not mix with graphite string. if you repack, remove all the old string, and start with new. you may have to add string a couple of times to get the packing nut properly full.--nbc0
