I have a 1980's Weil mclain  residential steam boiler; is there any reason not to switch to a vaporstat control.

    Before we answer that

do you have a one-pipe or a Vapor system? What model W-M is it?

    vaporstat?

It's a one pipe system and I'd have to dig out the literature but part of the model # was 66. I'll get the whole thing if that's not enough

    A Vaporstat is more critical

on a Vapor system, but there's no problem using it on yours. But if the boiler is oversized, a Vaporstat can make it short-cycle as pressure starts to build. If that happens, it may be possible to down-fire the burner slightly- when you look at the boiler model, also tell us what make and model burner is on it- for example, Beckett AFG. Take a picture if you're not sure and post it here.
