I'm looking for some help here. I went to a job on a call for smoke and found the unit all sooted up. It is a weil-mclein 68 P468 wt, beckett afg. I opened up the passages, did tune up, checked pump pressure, installed delevan 80A and when I did my overfire draft the needale pinned on the positive side with a lot of backpressure. my breech was neg .05 , trace of smoke, co2 at 8% stack 650 with .85 80A tried 1.00,1.10 1.25 little or no change in results. chamber is in good shape it was just cleaned  in april by others. my thoughts are to go off the chart and try a solid, or semi, or even a w with a narrow pattern to keep most of the air down the middle of the tube. I checked the chimney, it's clear unlined brick about 8x12 18-20 ft inside the house thru the roof. Plenty of draft obviously checked it with unit disconnected no obatructions clear to the top. Honestly I havn't encountered this before and I'm looking for any feedback. Much appreciated merry christmas Frank

    What did you use to measure the draft?  How did you open up the passages and tune it up?  I ask because if there were carbon buildup, the whole thing has to be taken apart and Thoroughly cleaned........?



    OK, bottom line what you are describing is STILL a plugged HX.......... 



    Why are you increasing the GPH on you nozzles?  I know that your just trying different stuff, but are you sure the original nozzle is the correct 1 even before you took the job?  Remember, that a 1 GPH nozzle will deliver 140,000BTU/HR  @100psi give or take.  Your Breach is Ultra fine, It's you OFD that's getting my attention.  Do you have any mor info?



    I'd be willing to bet that the furnace/boiler was spitting and sputtering.....OK i took a guess....:-)  If It were me, since you are back from a different CO's origional call, take the time to take it apart again and clean it.  Then we can determine to real cause of the problem...OK?

    The P-468 with AFG

    was supposed to fire a 1.25x80°A at 100 PSI, according to the OEM spec Guide that Beckett publishes. When I set one of these up I'll use a 1.00x80°A at 140 PSI, which gives me about 1.2 GPH and better atomization. But while you may have an atomization problem, it's not causing the positive pressure in the firing zone.



    Go back with a "soot saw" and clean it again from top to bottom. Pull the front plate and brush it out from the bottom too (soot saw doesn't work well from the bottom). While you have it open, make sure the proper head is on the burner- should be an F-6. The static disk on the drawer should be 2-3/4" diameter.



    Check the cut-off on the pump to see if it leaks down when the motor stops- it shouldn't. And if the burner does not have valve-on delay and motor-off delay, add these features. The easiest way to do this would be to use a CleanCut pump and a GeniSys or R7184P primary. This will clean up the starts and stops.



    When you fire the boiler after this clean-out and upgrading, you should have a normal over-fire draft and the burner should dial right in.
