Question About Thermostatic Radiator Valves
FJL
Member Posts: 354
I installed a thermostatic radiator valve on each of the two radiators in my living room. My question is are they designed to be kept at one temp setting once I find one that works or can the settings be changed from time to time? Lets say I purchased a christmas tree and want to turn the setting to keep that radiator cooler or my wife plans to spend the entire day cooking with the oven. Can I simply change the settings for as along as I want without doing damage to them?

Dan's Article....
Not sure if this will answer your question definitively ...however, here is a good article that Dan Holohan wrote about TRVs [url=http://www.masterplumbers.com/plumbviews/2003/thermostatic_radiator_valves.asp]http://www.masterplumbers.com/plumbviews/2003/thermostatic_radiator_valves.asp
.. if it matters...i think they are meant to be adjusted at will.
also .. I remember reading somewhere that placement of the sensor wire is pretty darn important.. perhaps it was in "We Got Steam"1-pipe Homeowner - Queens, NYC

Sensor
I agree with your statement about the sensor. I have the kind in which the sensor is attached to the vent. And each rad is near a window and one window has an air conditioner that I've yet to cover with plastic, and the one near the a/c is very sensitive to drafts. The other is near a closed window and works more reliably.0 -
TRVs
Think of TRVs like you would a thermostat. Turn them up and down as much as you want. Just keep in mind that they only limit overheating. Also you don't want them in the same room as your thermostat

Reasons to adjust
You can adjust them as much as you want. In fact, they even make timed setback TRVs.
But your reasons... Do you turn down the house thermostat when the oven is in use? If you find yourself needing to tweak the TRV a lot for comfort you may have a problem with sensor placement. If you don't have a lot of air flow around the sensor because of an enclosure or curtains you might need a remote sensor unit.0
