wet apartment

I live in an apartment building with steam heat. My heater has always made a lot of noise, but now is recently also shooting steam/water up into the air- I woke up this morning to find a whole pile of paperwork ruined that was on a table about 6 inches away from the heater. Is there anything I can do to fix this? Does it help if I close or open the valve more? (That's really the only thing I have control over) Thanks for your help.

The shutoff valve on the radiator
should be all the way open or all the way closed. If you have it partly open, water can build up in the radiator and squirt out the vent.
If you want to adjust the speed at which the radiator heats, try an adjustable vent like the Vent-Rite #1.All Steamed Up, Inc.

wet steam from high pressure
why not call the landlord? they may be more receptive than you might expect, as that system malfunction could be easily corrected, and use less fuel. your apartment may not be the only one with the "spray feature"!--nbc0
