Humidifing Radiator

My hot water heated home has 3 radiators (of ~20) with 'humidifiers' built into them. It looks like embedded with in the radiator is a pan with a water supply (separate from the radiator water), float valve (like a toilet), and overflow drain. The water supplies/drains for the radiator pans were never hooked up.
This is our second winter in the home and humidity is dipping like last winter. Has anyone seen this type of setup and does it work well? Is it worth the effort for me to hook up the supplies and drains? With a plant watering can i can sort of fill the pan by hand and the water seems to be gone the next day...so i'm sure it's going somewhere, just not sure yet if it's really making a difference.
thanks,
george
