How Do I Know What Kind of Radiator I Have?

I am living in an older house that was turned in to a duplex and our half does not have a thermostat. We were told by our landlord that the woman down stairs can turn the heat up for us, but we also have radiators in each room. I've done some research and have found out that I can turn the knob to turn the heat up, but I can't figure out if I have a steam radiator or hot water radiator. And should I just not even touch them? I don't want to break anything. Any suggestions?

Radiator
Hi - How many pipes are attached to each radiator? Are the pipes big like the cardboard center on a roll of toilet paper or are they like a garden hose or smaller? If you could post a picture on here it would help identify it much easier.
