Water running through pipes but no heat

Hey Guys,

I live in a college dorm with an old hot water heating system.  I have no control over the heat in the dorm.  At times the heat works just fine but at other times I hear water running through the pipes but there is no heat whatsoever.  I am worried because I have radiators right below my windows and I don't want my pipes to freeze and burst.  Is it normal to hear water running through my pipes but no heat or should I call my maintenance guys?

    Is your room warm?

If your room is warm you shouldn't have to worry about frozen pipes.

If water is flowing through the pipes they are less likely to freeze.

If you are concerned about it ask your maintenance people. They might look at you funny, but you'll feel better knowing, and they might teach you something. I think some systems circulate all the time, others only circulate when heat is needed. Your maintenance people might know which kind you have (and if it is not performing properly would probably like to know about it ;)
