Water heater: Indirect versus direct

I have a Bradford White gas hot water heater, while the heat is with a WM SGO-4 steam boiler.
If an indirect water heater was connected to this boiler (85% efficiency), would it be less costly to heat the water. Or is that fact that this is not a condensing boiler, make it a wash.
What will it take to get real efficiency numbers for hot water heaters?
Thanks,
Steve

They have efficent water heaters.
They even have condensing tank type gas water heaters. The issue is often one of rate of return as far as added cost of units versus added fuel savings. If you have the right water quality and live where the ground water temps on the high side you can go tank-less.Cost is what you spend , value is what you get.
