Progression of Combustion Efficiency

I read one of Mark Eathertons articles where he claimed to have a 95% new Giannoni heat exchanger boiler (Munchkin?) that went to about 60% efficiency after 3 years (without being serviced).
What I'd like to hear from you guys about is how is the progression of combustion efficiencies based on time for condensing boilers versus conventional boilers that you've serviced/installed over time? Any input would be much appreciated
