cast iron bangs

HELP- I have cast iron baseboard heat-- Every time the heat turns on or cools down it bangs loud enough to wake the neighbors!

The current temp setting on the oil burner is 180f

It seems to make noise closest to the beginning of the zone - the rest of the zone remains quiet.....

They have been bled and no signs of any air--

The noise comes from the actaul baseboard- not the pipes connecting the run.

HELP!

  • Expansion noise,,,,,,

Try loosening the clips holding-it to the wall and see if that helps.

Does it have the reflective (tinfoil) barrier behind? Have you recently painted?

If the pipe supply & return holes to the BB are large enough,, loosening the screws a-bit should help.

PS- Are you sure you need that high a temperature anyway? Perhaps look into outdoor reset, &/or constant circulation.

    banging

Not much in a hot water system to bang. Just a check or swing check valve, and maybe the pump itself jumping on start up or shut down. Usually expansion 'ticks'. Sounds like something is not secure and is jumping around when flow starts or stops. Likely a huge pump?

Just a guy running some pipes.
