Drop Header is "incorrect".

I was recently contracted by a local church to replace their old steam boiler. The spec on the boiler (HB SMITH) was made by an engineer who is also overseeing the installation.

Long story short: We piped the boiler with a drop header, the engineer has never seen a configuration like this and told our client-in-common that it needs to be cut out and redone.

Now I'm in the process of gathering materials to satisfy the concerns of both parties.

I already have the Lost Art of Steam stuff printed out, but I could use another couple of resources. There is nothing I can find in the Smith catalog.

Any and all help is appreciated.

    Link

Here's a link to the Megasteam manual, showing a drop header. It might help to call Smith and see if they have material. Have you checked the Library link here? I know there's drop header stuff there.

    Dropheader info.

I was going to recommend the Megasteam I&O manual too.

(Edit- Deleted link as you have it above.)

There some pictures of dropheaders on this (Heating Help)site.

You also might try Gerry Gill's website http://www.gwgillplumbingandheating.com/

He has some good pictures of dropheaders on his site. I attached a picture of multiple boiler he did that is very impressive.

The other argument you might want to use with your engineer is that unlike having the nipple joining  the header` with a tee that is rigid, the dropheader with the 2 elbows makes the piping movable (like a universal joint on a drive shaft) to allow for the difference in expansion between the boiler and the header piping. This relieves any stress on the boiler sections.

    Good Luck!

    Yeah, John

Maybe you should tell the engineer he needs to go back to school. Got his diploma from a Cracker Jack box.

Oh wait, you're in NY. Probably not a good idea. :)

    Good luck!

I'm often reminded of this favorite quote:

Rather than knock yourself out, you could state (as emphatically as he has) that the drop header is widely accepted and has many benefits, and invite HIM to educate HIMSELF. Perhaps phrase it as a question: "What problem do you see with this widely employed, beneficial bit of piping?"

Leave the onus on him to "heal thyself."

    Worth a shot!
