About 20 years ago my father in law told me that he changed his hot water system around so that the boiler shut off whenever the thermostat was off. It seemed like another of his crazy schemes then but now I am thinking seriously about it especially for fall and early spring months. It would have to save fuel oil for obvious reason that less heat would be escaping from the boiler during off time.
Any drawbacks that anyone can think of other than the obvious lag time to get heat?

If it is...
... a cast iron boiler, there is the risk/threat of rust happening when the metal is cool. In reading prior posts, this could amount to more than just a cosmetic problem.
