Mex verses Tsp WMcl 66 Boiler cleaner

I have a 25 year old Weil McClain 66 steam boiler with the rubber o rings. The water is dirty It's making wet steam.  Wmclain Tech Bullition says tsp, sodium carbonate, sodium hydroxide can be used to clean the boiler. Somewhere in Dan's writings he mentioned Mex for boilers with the rubber gaskets is safer for the gaskets? My heating guy never heard of Mex and wants to use sodium hydroxide since its in the Tech Bulletion. Should I hold out and get the Mex ? Any comments or experiences,

Thanks, Pete

You might want to give Rhomar a call.

They're good people to work with and should be able to give you the name of a local vendor if you decide to use one of their products.

    cleaning an old boiler

first, i would concentrate on skimming, without chemicals. the tsp, or washing soda will only loosen the dirt, and oils in a boiler. if your boiler  is 25 years old, most of that has been loosened already, and just needs to be drained out, and skimmed off.

send us a picture of your near boiler piping, so that can be inspected as well, and removed from the list of suspects for surging.--nbc
