Deep Setback With Steam a Problem?

Last winter I tried the following thermostat setback schedule:

6 AM to 7 AM 68 degrees (the bathroom gets really warm for showers)

7 AM to 5 PM 65 degrees

5 PM to 10 PM 68 degrees

10 PM to 6 AM 60 degrees

After figuring in degree-days, I seemed to save about 10% over the previous year with a much less drastic setback . . . but I also did a few other things to optimize the system, so its hard to tell what helped.

Some folks here say that having more than a couple of degrees of setback actually wastes fuel warming the house back up?  Sure, the boiler runs for most of the hour in the morning, but it hardly comes on all night.

If I can save money by being more comfortable, I'm all for that. Can anybody refer me to any kind of well-researched article on the effect of a small or large setback?

Thanks in advance!

Al
