I am looking to self train on steam boilers and currently have some knowledge, but would like to start from the beginning the right way. Any books to start with would be great.
Thank You:

getting to know about steam
i don't know whether you have a steam system yourself; but working on a system with some problems can be a real eyeopener. studying dan's books will also be helpful.
could you volunteer as a steam troubleshooter for maybe a church or public housing project? if you have the right problems, and a real interest in steam heating; you will learn pretty quickly.--nbc0 -
Thanks...
I have worked on them in the past, but I still get that fear factor that I am missing something. I will check out the recommended books. Again thanks.

Buy and old apartment building
Mike,
You can buy a big, old apartment building with steam heat. You will get to fix many old problems caused by previous owners, tenants and repairman.
And as an added bonus to motivate you will have tenants and possibly governmental agencies call and bitching at you that they are hot, cold, annoyed by noise or that you are just a a**hole slumlord. In addition if you screw up it will cost you a good bit of money and time.
Just a thought, it is how I learned.
I guess alternatively you could look for someone who already owns such a building and offer to work for free if they pay for supplies.0
