On October 4, 2009, the senior graduating class from the HVAC/R program at Suffolk County Community College will embark on a week-long trip to Miami, Florida. The purpose of this trip is to perform an energy audit for a Marriot resort in the area. The purpose of an energy audit is to calculate a building's/structure’s energy usage and energy costs by following the procedures outlined in a number of industry-accepted works including, but not limited to, ACCA's Manual J and the ASHRAE Handbook of Fundamentals. In order to complete this energy audit, the students will first gather and compile information and data about the individual building being evaluated. Once all of the data has been obtained, comprehensive reports pertaining to heating and cooling costs, appliance costs, and side-by-side system comparisons will be generated. After the physical hands-on portion of the project is completed on site, the students, after returning to the classroom, will prepare and present these reports to Marriot.
The completed energy audit will serve as a guide that the Marriot Corporation can utilize to help maximize the efficiency of the structures that make up this resort. It is also expected that the findings in this report will assist them in the evaluation of the efficiency of other properties as well.
This project will provide the students in the HVAC/R program at Suffolk County Community College with a valuable hands-on learning experience that will undoubtedly enhance their learning experience and desire for continued growth and participation in our ever-changing industry.
