When I was in a shop class in 8th grade, the instructor had a set of drills for making square holes (in wood). They are apparently used for making wood pieces fit together with just glue, not requiring nails. You drilled square holes in one piece, and you made the other piece stick out to match.

They way they worked was to have a drill that drilled round holes, but it was surrounded by a square bar of metal with a hole in it all the way through. And at the front, where the drill bit came out, it was sharpened like a chisel. So the drill bit took out most of the wood, and the chisel pard got the corners. The whole thing was used in a drill press.
