Direct Vent vs Chimney

if you have the usual gas-fired water heater, it will still need to use the chimney. In many cases with just the heater in an old chimney, it won't draft properly. So you'd need to switch to a power-vented heater, or run an indirect tank off the steam boiler (the preferred method).

The chimney liner may be the least expensive option.

    Direct Vent vs Chimney

I am considering conversion of an oil fired steam system to a gas fired steam system in a one pipe system. Steam radiation is about 425 sq. My chimney would need to be relined and if I decide to use that, it would be a 6 inch flue. I am considering a Burnham Independence PV direct vent system and would like additional pros and cons regarding that application of venting for this gas-steam system.

    Direct Vent Gas Steam

Anyone familiar with the Gas Steam Independence PV Direct Vent system that uses a draft inducing fan on the burner?
Does it work as well as a flue vented system? Pros and Cons?

    Hi Frank,
I don't have steam heat but I do have a power vented hot water boiler. It has been problem free since installed. If you go with a direct/power vent unit, make certain the installer follows the mfg installation instructions to the letter.
