Does this make sense?

Bill,
What is the hot water demand?

Whoever did the original install may have calculated that the 50 G oil fired HWHTR wouldn't be able to meet the peak demand.

A larger oil fired may not have been an option due to space, clearances or $ concerns.

    Does this make sense?

In a customers basement today I found a 50 gal Bock powering a 50 gal Superstor booster tank. A bronze circulator moved the water between heater and booster tank. Only the Superstor Booster tank supplied domestic hot water. The Bock only powered the booster tank, no radiant or baseboard.

If the 50g Bock is serving as the "boiler", isn't that weakest link? That is to say that the Bock will determine the size of the domestic hot water output. I know the Superstors are better insulated, but does it make sense to transfer BTU from Bock to Superstor to faucets? Why not eliminate the Superstor and take hot domestic water right from the Bock?

Well, I guess the SS would give you a buffer of hot water. You'd have to use some of that tank before the circ started pumping hot water from the Bock.

Sounds like they want to flow a lot of water in a short amount time. If they have a ton of shower heads and were flowing 8 GPM, the SS would give them a bit of extra time as long as the coil with heat from the Bock could keep up until the Bock got cool.

    Or something like that.
