Replacing Undermount Sink

Dropping the sink, I just wonder if I can maneuver the sink back up through the sink opening without lifting the granite. Rich, was your job a tight fit, or did you seem to have plenty of room, I have a sink base about three inches bigger than the sink.

Thanks, Bob Gagnon

  • Replacing Undermount Sink

I have a customer that wants to replace an undermount sink in a granite countertop. The sink base is a couple of inches bigger than the sink. Will I be able to get the old sink up and out through the sink hole and the new one back down and in, without removing the granite? Just wondering if anyone has done this before?

    Thanks, Bob Gagnon

What is holding it to the granite? Usually it's caulk and clips, so if you can remove the clips and peel the sink away from the bottom of the countertop, the sink should just drop out.

I have done this and it is not an easy job. I was able to use a fillet knive to break the bead and remove it by dropping it and maneuvering it up through the opening. It all depends on the depth of the sink and the cabinet size etc.High grade sealants (silicones) are used and they do not just drop out if they were sealed properly.

Do it T&M as it is hard to put a time factor on this

    Corner

It was a corner cabinet with plenty of room. I believe it took about four hours to put that new sink in.

Hire a granite guy to set the sink & then you can hook it up. lol less work for mother . make sure the new one is stainless steel & weighs about a pound. just joking , of course. i am sure if it can be done , you are the man for the job. planning ahead says it all.
