Trane #2 direct return trap
Steamhead (in transit)
Member Posts: 6,688
is essentially a pump that works on steam pressure. It is there to make sure the water can return to the boiler if the boiler pressure gets higher than about a pound. If you use a Vaporstat on the new boiler- as you should- you can keep the pressure below that point. This type of system (Vapor) was designed to not need more than 8 ounces or so on the coldest day of the year.
But I'd leave the DRT in place, unless steam is blowing thru it into the dry returns. Nothing wrong with wearing a belt AND a pair of suspenders.

Trane #2 direct return trap
Quoting a replacement steam boiler for residence that has this trap on the existing boiler. Can it be removed? What purpose does it serve?0 -
direct return trap
Thanks Steamhead. That basically confirms what I thought it was. Yes, it will continue to be a vapor system and I'll take your advice and leave it in place. Can I connect it right to the steam header as the header drip in the new piping?0 -
Not the header drip
come off the top of the header then go to the DRT. You don't want condensate getting into that line.
