Islandwood Solar Fini- PGP

Finally finished the Islandwood project and commissioned the solar system last week. The 120 tube Vitosol array was somewhat impacted by the tree line, which is holding back the sun on the panels till 10:30-11am. The owners may decide to do some trimming if they want more solar gain. The system raised the temp of a 425g thermal storage system on (2) cloudy days from 55 to 80; we've yet to have 2 successive sunny days, so we'll have to wait to see what it can do...The Vitosolic 200 control is not so easy to program, but easy to wire. The harness and terminals are made to easily trim out either HV or LV without fear of wires shorting. Good design by Viessmann (and Resol). I particularly like that all of the 3 solar pumps in this system are variable speed and very low wattage/amp draw.

Solar
Beautiful work, Paul. What kind of insulation did you use on the exterior piping? - DF

Jacketing
Thanks, Dan. You can tell Papi that my belly is almost as big as his. The outer cover is textured aluminum, over 2" wall fiberglass. We didn't do the pipe insulation, but specified the product to match the metal roof. The jacket comes with fittings and is also available in a plain finish and various colors.

Nice professional looking job Paul,Who makes the solar tank and what price range is it in. Does it fit through a standard door?0 -
Thermal Storage
The thermal storage is a 325g ASME tank made by AOSmith. It fits in a 36" door. $7-10K range.

survey?
If they don't get sun untill 11:00 they have big problems.I hope you pointed this out to them after reviewing the solar survey.??0 -
No Problemo
This system will work in tandem with the gas fired water heater. The only problem with less solar gain is they make less HW water from the sun. For budget reasons, the array was reduced to 120 tubes. They can always add an additional 60 tubes and increase the output of the system.
The management is well aware of the trade off between cutting more trees down at an environmental education center vs. more "free" DHW. However, in the winter, the sun strikes the roof earlier when the leaves fall.

Beautiful work.
Man! What a great looking job and structure to play with.
Paul,
I do not know what type of jacking you used over exterior piping, but I have found using it combined with Fiberglass insulation that water gets in the jacking and soaks the hell out the fiberglass. If you have tight seams, then no problem.
I switch to close cell foam even with jacketing because of that reason,
I would of love being on that job!
Nice work again.

wicked pissa!
Esp like the outside insulation. as far as guts go we all know the ladies would prefer a full keg to 6 pack abs any day....0 -
Spec job
This was a Div 15 spec project. The ME called for 2" fiberglass ans Zeston cover. The architect wanted a metallic covering to match the roof, and the fiberglass was not covered with the Zeston jackets before the metal covering. I'll be checking on the insulation moisture issues, if there are any. Thanks for the heads up!

nice job
and nice pick on the solar powered thermometer.
I just finished a Sunda evac tube job and installed close to the same type of piping with fiberglass insulation with aluminum jacketing.

Hey Paul
what's the blue box on the floor between the expansion tanks? Did your roof workers spray the metal roof with Sprite to make it sticky before they started work? You look good with a screwdriver in your hand. You could model for WearGard. WW

Hey Wayne, the blue can is an empty jug of tyflocor antifreeze which accepts the relief valve. If the system blows off, we can simply pump the fluid back into the system. This design is used by Caleffi as well as Viessmann. We bought a 55g drum of DowFrost 100% to use on the site, as there are 4 more solar DHW systems using Heliodyne flat panels.
The roof wasn't that slippery when dry. The pollen was the problem.
