Communicating Thermostat

don't use a duct system. If you've had a chance to see the inside of a duct after a few years of use, you'll get an idea of what all those primordial life forms will do to your health.

A/C can be handled by ductless mini-split units that would not require the ugly bulkheads that duct systems need. Air cleaning could be augmented using unit air cleaners if needed.

Whatever you do, don't tear out the hot-water system. It won't dry out the air in the house like forced-air does, and will cost much less to operate.

    Communicating Thermostat, Air Filtration

    Hi folks,

I was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis about a year ago. To make our house more comfortable and to make my breathing easier we are about to add AC to our 1885 house. It has duct work to each room from the original wood furnace. Our heat is radiator hot water. The rads were added around the turn of the century. I first posted here before we put in our new boiler. We put in exactly what you all recommended and we love it, THANK YOU! The boiler is now a Weil-McLain Ultra 155 "Mod-Con" with a indirect water heater. Now, when we put in a air handler we hope to include a heat coil as emergency back up heat. I would like to be able to network in a thermostat that I can monitor and control via our LAN and the internet. We are also concerned about trying to reduce dust etc to help my lung condition.

1.) What thermostat do you recommend? (Heat, Emergency Heat, AC, Humidistat???)

2.) What reasonably priced air filtration systems work well? (High quality home type, not necessarily hospital grade)

Thanks so much for all your help past and present. Dan E.

    Hello Dan

Honeywell makes the enviracom communication tstat that can be setup with a serial adapter and telephone access module.
    $$$$
As for the stat not sure if the honeywell IAQ stat would work with the enviracom setup. If it does then that the route I would take.

As for the aircleaner I like honeywell and aprilaire. However, which ever one you choose need to be install on a distribution system that is seal and size with the aircleaner in mind.

Sure wish I could see the photo of the home...but I have dailup here at the shop..enough said.

    Take care.

    Ecobee

we sell the Ecobee tstat it is touch screen like IPhone and it is set up to look for a wireless router so you just pop it on the wall and off you go. Can be adjusted anywhere in the world you have an internet connection.

I would be very concerned with using old ducts with your lung condition. Cleaning the ducts or good filters will not help you unless those ducts are tight!!!! You should look for a Comfort Institute or NCI member who has the proper training and tools to build a tight clean duct system. If the contractor does not have a ductblaster/infiltrometer blower door/flowhood etc then you should move on and find somebody else.

It is possible that a poorly installed A/c would actually make your condition worse than no A/C at all.
