Here are the Before Pictures
This old oil-fired coal-era boiler had long since reached the end of it's useful life. These pictures were taken during our decommissioning to get it ready to be removed by an asbestos abatement and demo crew.

And Here are the After Pictures...
The really nice thing about doing a residential steam boiler install in July, is that you can take your time.

Nice
Very nice job.....THAT is one to be proud of. The customer picked the right crew.0 -
looks great
That install looks like a trophy, nice job.
Does the customer have any plans on insulating the piping?
Must be pretty toasty down there in the winter.

Yes, they will
at least the near-boiler piping. The other side of the basement is a family room, so they do need some heat there.
As you might see in the pics, the old boiler was several feet into the family room. It was surrounded by red tiles. We moved the MegaSteam so it would be completely in the utility area. Now they can run a partition to separate the two areas if they wish.
The old boiler was a National dry-base all-fuel Heat Extractor with a Sunray FC flame-retention burner. We had it running pretty well, with flueway baffles to "cheat the chimney", but the MegaSteam makes steam much more quickly. And it runs much more quietly, too!
Those of you who haven't installed a MegaSteam- what are you waiting for?

Sweet!
Beautiful job,although I'm not surprised!0 -
nice job
I'm guessing the old National was a bit heavy goin out. Excellent work. peace0 -
We
sub-contracted that job, to the same company that did the asbestos.

Mega Steam
Nice job on the Mega Steam, Frank & Gordo. We are doing one in a few weeks. I agree with you on the summer steamer replacements - a lot less pressure! Now if we could just get it with a gas burner.......

I believe that Burnham has a piping kit for the Mega Steam. Is that what you used?0 -
Nope
that kit only has a 2-inch header, at least in the smaller sizes. We did buy one last time to see what was in it, used some of it on that one and some on this one. On both we built a 2-1/2" header.

Thanks for All Your Replies
Only one slight issue we had with the MagaSteam was the gauge glass positioning.
As you can see from the photo, we had to switch the door hinges from the left to the right (a nice feature, by the way!). This made the sight glass drain a bit hard to work on. Whenever we can, we install a proper blow-down valve to any sight glass, replacing the so-called "valve" supplied with the gauge.
We added 1/2" brass nipples, tees, and plugs to move the gauge glass away from the door hinges, thus providing good access to the new gauge glass drain valve.

Update and Pics
The owner called us this morning to say he just got an oil delivery that was half of what he usually gets this time of year. Not sure how this figures on a gallons-per-degree-day basis, but we plan to work this out for the whole season next spring.
Besides replacing the boiler, the only change we made this time was a programmable thermostat. It's too early to tell if these resulted in an actual 50% reduction in fuel consumption, but we'll definitely be watching this one. We had done a vent upgrade and tuned the old burner at the start of last season, which resulted in their own fuel savings.
