I am adding central air to my son's house. He has a boiler for heat with a heat only thermostat that has 18-2 wire.

The air handler will be in the attic.

Can I purchase a thermostat that will operate both the boiler and the air handler? Or will I need 2 thermostats. I understand that there may be some issues with two transformers(boiler and air handler) on the same thermostat.

If I can use only one thermostat will I have to run 18-5 wire?

Yes

you can use any heat/cool stat just be sure to remove the jumper between RH and RC and wire according to instructions.
I like the honeywell 800 series stats.

I usually retype something 3 times with 2 fingers, then I look up and see i used all caps except the one that are suppose to be caps. You must have fell asleep or went through some kind of time warp LOL
