ELECTRIC WATER HEATER PIPED INTO TANKLESS COIL.

Post pictures, I have seen it done before to save money on a true buffer/storage tank. Sounds like it is piped up wrong and or a check valve is missing.

TWO MEANS OF DOMESTIC HW.
I HAVE AN ELECTRIC WATER HEATER PIPED INTO A TANKLESS HW BOILER COIL. THERE IS ONLY HOT WATER WHEN BOILER IS TURNED ON; TANK DOES NOT MAKE ITS OWN HW. WHEN BOILER IS MAKING THE HW, THE INLET TO THE ELECTRIC WATER HEATER IS HOT AND THE OUTLET IS COLD? IM NOT SURE WHATS GOING ON? LOOKS LIKE THERE SHOULD JUST BE A STORAGE TANK IN PLACE OF THE WATER HEATER. IS THERE ANY WAY TO MAKE THE TWO WORK TOGETHER?0 -
Tear the mess out and install an indirect. What you have there still requires the boiler to maintain 160 or so year round. Horrible waste of energy. They use to do the same sort of set up and add a circulator to the mess but again, requires the boiler to run rear round.0 -
Actually , no
The boiler does not need to maintain 180 year round with that setup . Use a multi zone relay and triple aqauastat and treat the bronze circ as a priority zone . Works very well .
If you can post some pics of the system , it could help us see what's going on .0 -

Someone was probably trying to preheat the tank water thru the coil. The coil outlet should be the tank inlet-marked cold on the tank. If the thermostats and elements are working on you tank, it won't matter if the boiler is maintaining temp or not, just kind of free or low cost hot water during the heating season. Sounds like it is not piped correctly, of you have thermostat/element problem, or even no power to the water heater. Could also be dip tube problem. Pictures will help. peace0 -
Triple aquastat and multi zone relay will work but why spend the money on the controls just to keep using the inefficient tankless coil and a 40 gallon tank? Makes no sense. Throw enough money at anything and you can get it to work.0 -
Well
that would depend on how old the boiler , coil and tank are .
Fairly new system ? I'd save some money and buy the relay and bronze circ . A tankless coil is not as inefficient as you make it out to be .
And it also doesn't make any sense to throw away new equipment just to " upgrade " to an indirect . You ever time the recovery on a run of the mill indirect ? What about an aquabooster ? On the same make and model boiler ? You'd be suprised how close the times are .......0
