Anytime your heat source has the potential to or is set higher than the desired supply temp to the system (house). If you are using an electric water heater and are on an off peak program, then you want to store @ a higher temp and mix down for the domestic to increase your storage amount.

If you are using solar, then the potential for higher storage temp than set-point temp is definitely an issue. The mixing valve would work much the same way in this case; mixing the higher storage temp. with cold to achieve the desired system temperature.

The "thermostatic" part is the key issue here. Depending on the heat source, storage temps. can differ greatly. Using a thermostatic valve will be the safest, provided you select the proper valve that will fit into the temperature range of the supply side of the system.

    when is a thermostatic mixing valve required on a water heater. Is it 110 120 or 140.

    RUN the heater at higher temp . to prevent legionaires disease & use a holby mix. valve for safety
