New Trap and Old Tailpiece

Thanks to all. this site has been fantastic for me.
I'm a fairly handy HO when it comes to making sawdust.
Been doing home repair/painting/woodworking for 35 yrs. Some pro work (7 yrs) and some not so pro work. But it's what I like to do.
My plumbing experience is not so long however. It has been a long-term phobia for me actually. baby steps. But i do have a drivers lic...
My heating pro is coming by this week to help hook-up the vaporstat and low pres gauge, finish the 1/2" crossover trap piping etc.
I thought I could help installing the new traps on the Rads. (I got the impression it was a long process so i got started on removing the tough to reach traps...) We'll see. I don't mind getting my hands dirty. But I will let him take over if I get too stupid. Just trying to save a bit of money if i can. and learn something in process.
Another 20 yrs of experience and I will own this town in gravity vapor steam two-pipe... (but I may have the only system by then)
I'm very pleased with the 3 Gorton #2 vents "I" added and can't wait to fire this beast up when we get all the traps replaced. fingers crossed.
thanks again guys . your comments are so welcomed.

New Trap and Old Tailpiece?
Some of my traps were in such tight spaces that I could not get a wrench to remove the cover easily. So I removed the entire trap and ordered new traps of same manufacturer. (I also ordered guts for those traps that we can get covers off w/out removing entire trap).
Q: Is it crazy to try to put a new trap on an existing old male tailpiece? I would like to try this and see if I can get lucky and not get a leak. (it is same manuf--- MARSH No.1) Is there anything I can do to try to improve my odds of not leaking? ie, mild abrassion of old male tailpiece, pipe dope, etc.?
If the above is a bad idea...
Q: What is best way to get tailpiece off? It has a square hole for a spanner (pic) but I am not confident that it will turn after 80 yrs. The space is not wide enough for a small 10" pipe wrench. Break nut? Use torch to heat?
THANKS!

TAILPIECE SPUD
SCHMEAR THE SEAT WITH PERMATEX PIPE JOINT COMPOUND. . YOU SHOULD BE OK. TRY THE NEW TAILPIECE ON AN OLD TRAP . THAT SHOULD ESTABLISH IF THEY ARE INTERCHANGEABLE. TO REMOVE OLD TAILPIECE , CHOP OFF NUT & IT SHOULD UNSCREW. HEATING WITH TORCH COULD HELP BUT MIGHT CAUSE IT TO SNAP. OLD BRASS IS BRITTLE.0 -
I use a buzz grinder and cut off the nut, and then a regular pipe wrench to spin the old tailpiece out. If your threads match up (Hoffman old & new still have the same threads) then do what Bob said.

i would never interchange a spud with old and new no matter how good it seems to seat. my prefrence i guess.if you can not turn it out ,cut the spud close to the collar to remove the the collar then put your ten on the rest of the spud.if it breaks finish the job and cape it out .with all your trap changeouts and repairs and a valid drivers license your on way to being a helper!0 -
home job
Advice to a home owner is not the same as a professional plumber would get. think about the damage that could be done by an inexperienced mechanic trying to remove a spud & not knowing proper procedure. does " new " radiator ring a bell? it happens & i have witnessed it.bottom line , if the spud matches, it should work.0
