    waters cold here

low-mid 40s if coming from the ground, in urban areas coming from tanks, it can get down near freezing at times. this means that on-demand units have all the more to do to get up to their setpoint and the result is that much less volume of available hot water out of them.

wonder if any of you have used a passive tempering tank to feed an on-demand. like an old galvanized pressure tank or a stripped electric (or gas for that matter). seems like a no brainer to supply the on demand with 65 degree water rather than 45 if there's a concern with output capacity. I can imagine a fair bit of condensation off such a tank in the summer, but still seems like a good approach.

    whaddya think?

    I have an

80 gal. electric tank, breaker off, being feed by two geo heat pumps DHW circuits fed to a propane Noritz 63.

    They love it.

    your tank is insulated

is it not? with heat being supplied by heat pumps, not unlike a solar preheat tank.

I'm wondering about a bare tank just passively picking up heat from its surroundings. in the summer, absolutely free (could even be considered helping any cooling load); in the winter a wash energy wise, but would still allow an on-demand unit to produce more by raising inlet temp.
