insulation: to gap or not gap plates

I'm using the thin, non-extruded plates, in a staple up application. Should the insulation (r19) be applied directly up to the plates or should there be a gap? I've read, w/ plates, there should be no gap, but I believe that was for the heavy extruded plates. Thanks!!
never mind...i think the responses here cover it, use gap for thin plates....sorry
