Vacuum Pump?

in THE MAIN WALL
We need to replace our steam boiler as the old one sprung multiple leaks. We have a 2 pipe steam system and the copper to the Select Temp turbines and convectors (we have both)are 3/8" and 1/2". I have been told that because of the size of these pipes I need a vacuum pump. Can anyone tell me if this is true?
